We Write to Taste Life Twice

“We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospection. We write, like Proust, to render all of it eternal, and to persuade ourselves that it is eternal. We write to be able to transcend our life, to reach beyond it.”

―Anaïs Nin

Our days spent away from home, are some of the most precious of all. Travel expands our world and leaves us inspired,  journalling allows us to capture the inspiration and revisit it later. Here are five reasons why recording your memories on paper is a worthwhile pursuit.

1. Immerse yourself in the present

Rekindling the true magic of travel relies on our ability to savour the moment. The same tools that have allowed us to orchestrate an adventure in minutes, have also become a barrier to our lived experience. Instead, writing in a journal allows us to channel our energy into the present and appreciate the now.

2. Memories for a lifetime

The value of documenting your adventures will compound over the years. No matter how insignificant the entry may seem at the time, it is with certainty that you will someday in the future read it back with a nostalgic smile on your face, having re-lived a memory that you had previously forgotten existed.

3. Savour the Inspiration

Travelling can be a sensory overload. Often, your days will be a blur of sights, sounds and scents, which can pass too freely from your mind if you don’t note them down. Writing down impressions of the places, people and moments that you encounter provides lasting insights and sparks of inspiration for projects back at home.

4. Learn about yourself

Writing is a window to the soul. As much as you may, or may not, think you know about yourself, you never truly know what will emerge from the tip of your pen when you’re least expecting it. And that’s the beauty.

5. Become a better writer

Only through practice can you flourish at anything, most certainly including writing. What at first might feel like self-consciously squirming across the page, will fast become fevered jotting as you try to keep up with the surprising pace of your own thoughts. Your confidence will grow as your style surfaces and you might even be tempted to share some choice phrases to a willing ear.
